Europa-Park in Rust is a 15 to 20 minute drive from our holiday apartments. The park is divided into themed areas based on European countries: France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Iceland, Ireland and more. Moving from one area to the next changes the architecture, the food and the music. That gives the day a structure of its own, even if you do not ride every attraction.Roller coaster fans will find Silver Star in the French area, Poseidon in Greece and the Europa-Park Express in Portugal. For younger children there are areas such as Italy with Euromaus, and the Baa Baa Express in Ireland. All attractions and current news are listed on the Europa-Park website. One day is hardly enough if you want to ride a lot and not just queue. Two days are more relaxed, and in the evening you are back in your apartment after 15 to 20 minutes. Opening times, ticket prices and the winter season change every year, so check the park’s website before you travel. For water slides and pools, visit neighbouring Rulantica, which is also open in winter.See both apartments side by side: Holiday apartments near Europa-Park at a glance.
Rulantica is right next to Europa-Park in Rust, a 15 to 20 minute drive from our holiday apartments. The water world has a Nordic design, and its areas have names such as Svalgurok, Snorri or Vildstrom. It is open all year, so it is also a good option in winter or in bad weather.Children have a beach area and water playgrounds, slide fans find several slide landscapes, and on the Surf Fjord you can ride waves. If you prefer quiet, head to the Hyggedal area with its sauna and relaxation area, or to the outdoor area at the Frigg Temple. That way families with small children, teenagers and adults all get their money’s worth in one day, without everyone having to do the same thing.Rulantica is a separate park with its own ticket, not part of the Europa-Park admission. Prices, opening times and rules are on the Rulantica website and change from year to year. Rulantica is especially worthwhile on the day you arrive after a long drive or on the day you leave, because you do not have to plan a whole park day.If you combine Rulantica with Europa-Park, you will find our two apartments under Holiday apartments near Europa-Park and Rulantica.
Strasbourg: cathedral, canals and La Petite France
A city with an old town best explored on foot and by boat.
Strasbourg is about 35 minutes by car from Lahr and about 30 from Schwanau. At its centre stands the cathedral with its tall tower. A few steps away begins La Petite France, the quarter of half-timbered houses along the canals. A boat tour on the Ill takes about an hour and passes the main sights. Plan half a day to a full day for the old town. One of Europe’s best-known Christmas markets takes place here in December, and then it is crowded.

Colourful half-timbered houses and canals in a small space.
You can reach Colmar from Lahr and Schwanau in about 45 minutes. The old town is compact and easy to explore on foot. Best known is Little Venice, the quarter with the canals and the coloured houses. Also worth seeing are the Maison Pfister, the Koïfhus and the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altarpiece. A lot of wine is grown in Alsace, and two wine estates in the old town offer tastings. Colmar works well as a day trip, and in December because of the Christmas markets.
For bathing, walking and a quiet day.
Baden-Baden is about 45 minutes from Lahr and Schwanau. The town is known for its thermal springs: the Caracalla Therme is modern and large, the Friedrichsbad a historic bathhouse from the 19th century. Between the baths, the Lichtentaler Allee leads through a long park along the Oos, with old trees, flower beds and the Museum Frieder Burda. Baden-Baden is less suited to a day with children, but couples and adults will find peace here.

Gengenbach lies in the Kinzig valley, about 20 minutes by car from our apartments. The old town consists of well-preserved half-timbered houses, lanes and small squares, and can be explored on foot in two to three hours. In December the town hall becomes an advent calendar: every evening a new window opens, and many visitors gather on the square in front of it. If you have more time, walk up into the vineyards or visit the monastery church. There are cafés and inns in town, and in autumn also Federweißer, the young wine of the region. Gengenbach is a good half-day trip, especially on days when Europa-Park does not suit.
The Taubergießen nature reserve lies between Rheinhausen, Kappel-Grafenhausen, Rust and Schwanau. It covers around 1,700 hectares of floodplain forest with a network of streams and canals. Schwanau, where our holiday apartment is located, is one of the municipalities on the reserve.
A special feature is the trips by punt: local fishermen take visitors through the forest on the waterways. An overview of the area and the trips is available from Schwarzwald Tourismus, and a report is at Urwald am Rhein. The Regierungspräsidium Freiburg has information on protection rules and background.
It fits well into a day without Europa-Park. Dates and prices of the boat trips are best asked directly from the operators before you go.

The Black Forest is Germany’s largest low mountain range. The holiday region covers around 11,100 square kilometres in the south-west. In the north, long forested ridges dominate, in the middle there are broad meadow valleys, and in the south treeless summits rise. The highest peak is the Feldberg at 1,493 metres.
Well-known destinations are the Triberg Waterfalls, which drop 163 metres in seven stages and are considered one of the highest waterfalls in Germany, and Lake Titisee in Titisee-Neustadt, which attracts many visitors in summer. For the Feldberg or Triberg, plan a full day. Gengenbach and the Rhine plain fit into half a day.
An overview of the region is in the Little Black Forest Guide (in German).
